BOSS Magazine | Consumer trends and gift guide for Valentine’s Day
The hottest Valentine’s Day trends and a BOSS gift guide to suit every budget.
It is the most romantic time of the year. Do you know which Valentine’s Day gifts are on the wish lists of your loved ones? According to National Retail Federation (NRF), 54.8% of Americans celebrate the holiday. That’s one in two people in the United States
Last year alone, a total of $ 19.7 billion was also spent on romantic festivities. Coming right behind Christmas and Mother Valentine’s Day wins bronze for top-grossing holiday of the year, roughly $ 20 billion consumer expenses.
Consumption trends
It is also the largest flower industry in the United States in terms of dollar consumer spending. Prince & Prince predicts that in 2017, more than 43 million households in the United States will purchase fresh cut flowers, mainly roses, and / or potted plants on this holiday. Each buying household is expected to spend, on average, around $ 75 on flowers (with associated delivery and service charges included). Meanwhile, Canada arrives with 12.3 million dozen roses imported for the holidays. A more unique trend for Canadian Valentine’s Day: delicious bouquets Doritos Ketchup Roses, which are currently already sold out.
Despite huge spending trends, the 2016 figures are almost 10% lower than 2007.
That being said, vacations continue to pay off as the NRF Consumption Study suggests that the average shopper spends $ 147 on their Valentine’s Day.
Most consumers begin shopping for the romantic vacation about two weeks in advance – 46% of purchases – and many wait until the very last minute – 30% of purchases occur on February 14 to be exact.
Where are these purchases going this year? Well, NRF reports that 28% of shoppers have discovered giveaways online and the electronic V-Day hunt is on the rise. Traditional florists have been hit hard, dropping 41% since 2001. IBISWorld shares that online flower shops have seen a six percent increase in sales over the past five years.
And while 90.8 percent of people said they would celebrate with another or a spouse, spending on furry friends is booming: Valentine’s Day gifts for pets are now a $ 681 million industry.
Thanks to President’s Day, Valentine’s Day and super bowl, many sales take place for televisions, winter clothes, tax Valentine’s Day software and articles and activities.
