Copper Country locations honored in 2021 ‘Lake Superior Magazine’ Best of the Lake Awards

KEWEENAW, HOUGHTON COUNTIES, Mich. (WLUC) – If Lake Superior Magazine’s Best of the Lake 2021 awards were an Olympic event, the Keweenaw Peninsula would bring in a lot of gold this year.

The magazine’s annual survey asked readers to pick their favorite locations on Lake Superior for topics like fall colors, restaurants, shopping, lodging, and more. Of the nine possible award categories, seven Keweenaw favorites were named Michigan’s “Readers’ Choice”.

List of Michigan Best of the Lake Awards 2021:

  • Brockway Mountain – The best place to admire the fall colors
  • Fitzgerald’s – Best Local Takeout
  • Keweenaw Mountain Lodge – Best Place for Friendly Accommodation (Fitzgerald Finalist)
  • Jampot – Best Sweet Treats Store
  • Quincy Mine – Best Historic Site or Museum
  • Copper World – Best Local Store
  • Bete Grise Bay – Best place to play in the water (Great Sand Bay finalist)

According to Brad Barnett, executive director of the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau, this recognition comes at a time when travelers are looking for unique and authentic outdoor experiences.

“One of the defining features of the Keweenaw Peninsula is the abundance of Lake Superior shores and pristine wilderness,” Barnett explained. “It’s a little different in this far north, and I think people new to the Keweenaw Peninsula appreciate that it’s raw, wild and still unknown.”

Tom Wright of the Quincy Mine Hoist Association was grateful for this recognition.

“The Quincy Mine Hoist Association would like to express its gratitude for being selected as the best historical site / museum for the“ Best of The Lake 2021 ”awards. Without the many visitors who come to Quincy, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do – renovating and preserving the historic Quincy Mining Company property and buildings, but more importantly, for the opportunity to share stories of the impact of Michigan’s Copper Country on the growth of our nation.
